Willem Claesen "Flake": Fragile Magic Piano

Willem Claesen’s composition "Flake" is an ode to the fragility and charm of a fleeting moment, as delicate and ephemeral as a snowflake resting on a palm. Hailing from Diepenbeek, a quaint town where the whims of nature may well have been his first muse, Willem absorbed his love for the keyboard early in life. His journey, beginning with the church organ and school bands, seems to have paved the way for the creation of such evocative works.

"Flake" opens with a minimalist melody, as if the first snowflake begins its descent, dancing from the heavens. Delicate phrases in the upper register of the piano create a sense of fragility and weightlessness, evoking the soft melody of snowfall blanketing the world in silence. The harmony, built on transparent intervals and subtle modulations, unveils the profound beauty of a winter’s reflection.
